Chicago Motorcycle Training Courses

Basic Rider Course (BRC)

LRN2RYD delivers the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's primary course of instruction in a refreshing and exciting manner. The 20 hour course is taught over four days. Each five hour day begins with about an hour of classroom review and is followed by four hours of riding practice on a LRN2RYD motorcycle. Student to teacher ratios are guaranteed never to exceed four to one. By providing more riding time and limiting the number of riders on the course we can maximize the amount of time actually spent learning to ride a motorcycle.

In addition to the 20 hour course, Larry Scalzitti will be available at LakeShore Harley Davidson in Libertyville every Wednesday during the riding season. All LRN2RYD students are encouraged to stop in and watch training videos, discuss motorcycling, get some additional hands on training time or just swap stories about motorcycles. There is no additional charge for this extra training time.

Prior to beginning your course you will need to do the following:

  • Obtain an Illinois Motorcycle Learner's Permit from your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You'll have to take a 15 question multiple choice test and pay a $10 processing fee. The test is based on the Illinois Motorcycle Operators's Manual.
  • Make an appointment to meet with Larry Scalzitti. We'll sit down and fill out all of the required paperwork. It will also give us some time to get acquainted and form the basis for a great relationship.
  • Pay the $399 tuition in order to hold your seat in the class that you want.

You must bring the following items to class in order to participate:

  • DOT approved helmet
  • Eye protection
  • Full fingered gloves
  • Long sleeved shirt
  • Full length denim or heavy canvas pants
  • Over the ankle boots. No big fashion heels or extra big toe boxes
  • A well rested mind and body and an enthusiastic and positive attitude

After you've passed the course, you will be ready to take the road test at the DMV and get your M endorsement. LRN2RYD staff will meet you there with the bike you trained on at a time that is convenient for you. Unlike other local training programs there is no additional fee for the DMV test.
